HackMining is a 45-hour innovation hackathon to build solutions for the real-world challenges faced by the mining industry. Hack Mining is an opportunity to showcase your talent, build your skills, network with key industry leaders, win valuable prizes and potentially solve pressing social, environmental and business problems. University-level students and start-ups from anywhere in Canada are invited to explore, connect and solve problems over the course of 45 hours. The winning solution will be presented at the Annual CMIC National Mining Innovation Forum on June 6th, 2017.
Teams will choose ONE of the following two challenges to work on during the hackathon. More information will be provided for each as we get closer to the event:
Edyta Pacuk is the President of MarchFifteen Consulting, a firm that specializes in Strategic Talent Management. She has over 20 years of experience in her field and specializes in leadership and executive effectiveness. She is known to be an innovative and effective business partner.As a coach and assessor, she focuses on leveraging her expertise and experience to assist her clients in making the desired impact. She has a reputation for candour and responsiveness. Adept at identifying game-changing priorities, she provides pragmatic advice and practical solutions for achieving individual, team and organization-wide goals.
Recently, Edyta has been added to a prestigious group of executive coaches on the Forbes Coaches Council. Edyta is also a Vice Chair of Pine River Institute Board, where she holds the role of HR Committee Chair, and is also a member of the Governance Committee. She is a Co- Chair of the HR Committee of the Outward Bound Canada Board and is a member of the Governance Committee as well.
Michael Wekerle started his career on the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange and rose to become one of the top institutional traders in Canada. A veteran of the capital markets, he is known for his shrewd value spotting across multiple sectors. He is the co-founder and chair of the specialty finance firm Difference Capital Financial Inc., whose holdings include such successful growth companies as Hootsuite, Vision Critical, BuildDirect and Blue Ant Media.
Before launching Difference Capital, Michael was a partner and co-founder of Griffiths McBurney & Partners (now GMP Securities), which grew to become Canada’s leading independent investment dealer. Foreseeing major changes in the financial services industry, particularly for independent firms, he shifted his focus away from Bay Street and onto other sectors, most notably real estate and technology. Following the 2008 financial collapse, he began buying distressed real estate in the U.S., including many commercial properties in South Florida. The investments saw triple-digit returns. In anticipation of a resurgent tech sector, he bought an impressive portfolio of former BlackBerry buildings in Waterloo, Ontario. In early 2015, Michael acquired the El Mocambo, an iconic Toronto music venue that is currently being transformed into a cutting-edge entertainment and production facility. He is also a partner in the Canadian franchise of Wahlburgers—Paul, Donnie and Mark Wahlberg's Boston-based burger chain.
Michael lives in Toronto and is a doting father to six children. He donates millions of dollars to a wide variety of philanthropic interests, including UHN, CAMH, SickKids and Holland Bloorview, as well as the youth outreach organization Seeds of Hope and the acclaimed Baroque opera company Opera Atelier. Michael appears frequently on national television and radio programs, and is a popular public speaker, often sharing valuable insights on stock market trends, real estate investment, and the growth of the tech industry. He is currently featured on CBC’s Dragons’ Den, highlighting his entrepreneurial spirit.

Second Prize: $1,500 cash, and either visit or lunch based on the choice from 1st prize winner.

Participants: Various mini-contest will take place to engage the participants during the hackathon - There are 50 silver maple leafs coins that will be awarded through such activities.
